Flight Map shows where you are on a flight using your phone's GPS. It is made by meadowSweet, an independent developer in the UK. Contact: hello@getflightmap.com.
What the app uses and where it stays
- Your location. The app reads your phone's GPS while you track a flight (after you tap Start) and briefly when you open it. Positions, your route, your logbook and the flights you plan are stored only on your phone. They are never sent to us or anyone else.
- Weather downloads. To show turbulence reports and the weather at your arrival airport, the app downloads public reports from NOAA's Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov). These requests include the codes of the airports in your trip, not your position.
- North Atlantic tracks (test versions). On a trip across the North Atlantic, with internet, the app downloads the day's published oceanic tracks from the US Federal Aviation Administration (notams.faa.gov) and notes them in its log on your phone, so the route flown can be compared with them.
- Satellite orbit data. The app asks Android to refresh the GPS's orbit data (provided by your phone's maker or Google) so the GPS finds you faster.
- Plane Wi-Fi (test versions). When your phone is on a plane's Wi-Fi, the app checks whether the in-flight entertainment providers' flight-data pages answer (Panasonic Avionics, Gogo/Intelsat, United and Viasat), and notes the result in its log on your phone. Nothing about you is sent with these requests.
- The debug log. The app keeps a log of its own activity on your phone for 7 days, including positions in the air (positions on the ground are rounded to about 1 km when you share it). It leaves your phone only if you share it yourself (More, Log, Share), to the app and person you choose.
With each download, the server you reach sees your phone's internet address, as with any app or website. We don't run any servers that the app talks to.
What we don't do
No accounts, no advertising, no analytics, no tracking across apps, no selling or sharing of data. If anonymous usage statistics are added later, they will be optional, will never include your position or route, and this policy will be updated first.
If you email us
If you write to hello@getflightmap.com, for example to join the test or to send a log, we use your email and what you send only to reply and to improve the app, and we don't pass it on. Ask and we'll delete it.
Deleting your data
Everything is on your phone. Clear the route, log or logbook in the app, or uninstall it to delete everything.
Children
The app is not intended for children under 13.
Changes
Any change to this policy will be posted here with a new date.
